Thyroid Cancer

  • Thyroid cancer originates in the cells of the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped organ located in the front of the neck.
  • It is relatively rare compared to other types of cancer but is usually treatable, especially when detected early.
  • The thyroid gland plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism through hormone production.

Causes

  1. Radiation Exposure: Previous exposure to high levels of radiation increases the risk.
  2. Genetic Factors: A family history of thyroid cancer may elevate susceptibility.
  3. Gender and Age: Women are more prone, and the risk increases with age.
  4. Certain Genetic Conditions: Inherited conditions like familial medullary thyroid cancer (FMTC) or multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN).

Signs & Symptoms

  1. Lump in the Neck: A noticeable mass or swelling in the thyroid region.
  2. Voice Changes: Hoarseness or other vocal changes.
  3. Difficulty Swallowing or Breathing: Pressure on the esophagus or trachea.
  4. Persistent Neck Pain: Discomfort or pain in the neck area.
  5. Thyroid Nodule: The presence of a lump or abnormal growth on the thyroid gland.
