Lung Cancer
- Lung cancer originates in the cells of the lungs, often in the lining of the bronchi (air passages).
- It is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally.
- Two main types are non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC).
Causes
- Smoking: The primary cause, responsible for the majority of lung cancer cases.
- Secondhand Smoke Exposure: Non-smokers exposed to tobacco smoke are at risk.
- Radon Gas: Inhalation of radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas.
- Occupational Exposures: Certain workplace chemicals and substances.
- Family History: Genetic predisposition can increase susceptibility.
Signs & Symptoms
- Persistent Cough: Lasting more than a few weeks.
- Shortness of Breath: Difficulty in breathing or breathlessness.
- Chest Pain: Discomfort or pain in the chest.
- Unexplained Weight Loss: Significant weight loss without an apparent cause.
- Fatigue: Persistent lack of energy.
