Lung Cancer

  • Lung cancer originates in the cells of the lungs, often in the lining of the bronchi (air passages).
  • It is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally.
  • Two main types are non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC).

Causes

  1. Smoking: The primary cause, responsible for the majority of lung cancer cases.
  2. Secondhand Smoke Exposure: Non-smokers exposed to tobacco smoke are at risk.
  3. Radon Gas: Inhalation of radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas.
  4. Occupational Exposures: Certain workplace chemicals and substances.
  5. Family History: Genetic predisposition can increase susceptibility.

Signs & Symptoms

  1. Persistent Cough: Lasting more than a few weeks.
  2. Shortness of Breath: Difficulty in breathing or breathlessness.
  3. Chest Pain: Discomfort or pain in the chest.
  4. Unexplained Weight Loss: Significant weight loss without an apparent cause.
  5. Fatigue: Persistent lack of energy.
