Ovarian Cancer
- Ovarian cancer originates in the ovaries, the female reproductive organs responsible for producing eggs.
- It is often called the “silent killer” as symptoms may not manifest until the disease is advanced.
- Early detection is challenging, and ovarian cancer ranks among the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in women.
Causes
- Age: The risk increases with age, particularly in postmenopausal women.
- Genetic Factors: Inherited mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes elevate susceptibility.
- Family History: A family history of ovarian, breast, or colorectal cancer increases risk.
- Reproductive Factors: Never having been pregnant or starting menstruation early may be contributing factors.
- Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): Long-term use of estrogen-only HRT.
Signs & Symptoms
- Abdominal Pain: Discomfort or pain in the pelvic or abdominal region.
- Bloating: Persistent swelling or feeling of fullness in the abdomen.
- Changes in Bowel Habits: Altered bowel movements or persistent constipation.
- Frequent Urination: Urgency or increased frequency.
- Unexplained Weight Loss: Significant weight loss without an apparent cause.
