Ovarian Cancer
Ovarian cancer originates in the ovaries, the female reproductive organs responsible for producing eggs.
It is often called the “silent killer” as symptoms may not manifest until the disease is advanced.
Early detection is challenging, and ovarian cancer ranks among the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in women.
Causes
Age: The risk increases with age, particularly in postmenopausal women.
Genetic Factors: Inherited mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes elevate susceptibility.
Family History: A family history of ovarian, breast, or colorectal cancer increases risk.
Reproductive Factors: Never having been pregnant or starting menstruation early may be contributing factors.
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): Long-term use of estrogen-only HRT.
Signs & Symptoms
Abdominal Pain: Discomfort or pain in the pelvic or abdominal region.
Bloating: Persistent swelling or feeling of fullness in the abdomen.
Changes in Bowel Habits: Altered bowel movements or persistent constipation.
Frequent Urination: Urgency or increased frequency.
Unexplained Weight Loss: Significant weight loss without an apparent cause.
