ovarian cancer

Ovarian Cancer

  • Ovarian cancer originates in the ovaries, the female reproductive organs responsible for producing eggs.
  • It is often called the “silent killer” as symptoms may not manifest until the disease is advanced.
  • Early detection is challenging, and ovarian cancer ranks among the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in women.

Causes

  1. Age: The risk increases with age, particularly in postmenopausal women.
  2. Genetic Factors: Inherited mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes elevate susceptibility.
  3. Family History: A family history of ovarian, breast, or colorectal cancer increases risk.
  4. Reproductive Factors: Never having been pregnant or starting menstruation early may be contributing factors.
  5. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): Long-term use of estrogen-only HRT.

Signs & Symptoms

  1. Abdominal Pain: Discomfort or pain in the pelvic or abdominal region.
  2. Bloating: Persistent swelling or feeling of fullness in the abdomen.
  3. Changes in Bowel Habits: Altered bowel movements or persistent constipation.
  4. Frequent Urination: Urgency or increased frequency.
  5. Unexplained Weight Loss: Significant weight loss without an apparent cause.
