Liver Cancer

  • Liver cancer, also known as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), originates in the cells of the liver.
  • It often arises in the setting of chronic liver diseases, such as cirrhosis.
  • Liver cancer is a global health concern with varying risk factors influencing its development.

Causes

  1. Chronic Viral Hepatitis: Long-term infection with hepatitis B or C increases the risk.
  2. Cirrhosis: Scarring of the liver tissue, commonly caused by chronic alcoholism or viral hepatitis.
  3. Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD): Accumulation of fat in the liver.
  4. Aflatoxins: Toxins produced by certain molds found in peanuts, corn, and other crops.
  5. Alcohol Consumption: Excessive and prolonged alcohol intake is a significant risk factor.

Signs & Symptoms

  1. Abdominal Pain: Discomfort or pain in the upper abdomen.
  2. Unexplained Weight Loss: Significant weight loss without an apparent cause.
  3. Jaundice: Yellowing of the skin and eyes.
  4. Swelling in the Abdomen: Accumulation of fluid (ascites).
  5. Loss of Appetite and Fatigue: Generalized weakness and reduced interest in food.
