Esophageal Cancer

  • Esophageal cancer develops in the esophagus, the tube connecting the throat to the stomach.
  • It is often diagnosed at advanced stages, limiting treatment options and highlighting the importance of early detection.
  • The two primary subtypes are adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

Causes

  1. Chronic Acid Reflux (GERD): Persistent reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus.
  2. Smoking and Excessive Alcohol Consumption: Both are significant risk factors.
  3. Obesity: Increased body weight, especially around the abdomen.
  4. Barrett’s Esophagus: A condition where the normal lining of the esophagus is replaced by tissue similar to the lining of the intestine.
  5. Age and Gender: Esophageal cancer is more common in older individuals, and men are at a higher risk.

Signs & Symptoms

  1. Difficulty Swallowing: Dysphagia or a feeling of food getting stuck in the throat.
  2. Unexplained Weight Loss: Significant weight loss without an apparent cause.
  3. Chest Pain or Discomfort: Sensations of pressure or burning in the chest.
  4. Persistent Cough or Hoarseness: Especially if unrelated to other respiratory conditions.
  5. Indigestion or Heartburn: Frequent and persistent symptoms.
