Esophageal Cancer
Esophageal cancer develops in the esophagus, the tube connecting the throat to the stomach.
It is often diagnosed at advanced stages, limiting treatment options and highlighting the importance of early detection.
The two primary subtypes are adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.
Causes
Chronic Acid Reflux (GERD): Persistent reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus.
Smoking and Excessive Alcohol Consumption: Both are significant risk factors.
Obesity: Increased body weight, especially around the abdomen.
Barrett’s Esophagus: A condition where the normal lining of the esophagus is replaced by tissue similar to the lining of the intestine.
Age and Gender: Esophageal cancer is more common in older individuals, and men are at a higher risk.
Signs & Symptoms
Difficulty Swallowing: Dysphagia or a feeling of food getting stuck in the throat.
Unexplained Weight Loss: Significant weight loss without an apparent cause.
Chest Pain or Discomfort: Sensations of pressure or burning in the chest.
Persistent Cough or Hoarseness: Especially if unrelated to other respiratory conditions.
Indigestion or Heartburn: Frequent and persistent symptoms.
