Skin Cancer

  • Skin cancer is a type of cancer that originates in the skin cells.

  • The most common types are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.

  • Primarily caused by the uncontrolled growth of skin cells, often triggered by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds.

Causes

  1. UV Radiation Exposure: Prolonged exposure to the sun’s UV rays is the leading cause.
  2. Tanning Beds and Lamps: Artificial sources of UV radiation contribute to the risk.
  3. Fair Skin, Light Hair, and Eyes: Individuals with lighter features are more susceptible.
  4. History of Sunburns: Previous incidents of sunburn increase vulnerability.
  5. Family History: Genetic predisposition plays a role.
  6. Weakened Immune System: Immunocompromised individuals are at higher risk.

Signs & Symptoms

  1. Changes in Moles: Look for alterations in size, shape, or color.
  2. New Moles: Development of new pigmented or unusual growths.
  3. Persistent Itching or Tenderness: Sensations that don’t resolve.
  4. Bleeding or Oozing: Moles or lesions that exhibit unusual discharge.
  5. Non-Healing Sores: Wounds that do not heal within expected time frames.
